FSU football: Virginia Tech QB Kyron Drones says Doak atmosphere 'overhyped'
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football welcomed the Virginia Tech Hokies to Doak Campbell Stadium in October 2023 for the first time since the 2018 season opener, where Willie Taggart made his FSU coaching debut. The latter was an embarrassing loss, and FSU fans remembered that as the Hokies came to town for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff. FSU was a 23.5 betting favorite, and FSU made it 22-0 before the first quarter ended. FSU won the game 39-17. It was a sold-out crowd with 79,560 in attendance, and we were waiting to see if Virginia Tech would make it a game. It didn't surprise me when I heard Virginia Tech quarterback Kyron Drones say he thought Doak Campbell Stadium was overhyped on a Shedeur Sander's podcast:
“I feel like that was overhyped. I feel like it goes crazy for a night game. That game was overhyped though. Not (as loud as Louisville) though.”
I mean it's a game FSU is supposed to win big, and they nearly covered the spread in the first quarter. Nobody was worried about losing that game, so of course, the crowd wasn't going to be crazy. FSU had rattled off 10 consecutive wins going back to the 2022 season. However, he's right in saying Doak Campbell Stadium at nighttime is a different animal. It's all subjective, but he says Virginia Tech is No. 1(of course he'll say that), and Louisville was louder. The Louisville game had 50,000 fans, and the Cardinals beat them by 30+ points. At that point, it was the best season Louisville had had since 2016 with Lamar Jackson. Of course, they were hyped when they hadn't been used to winning in quite some time. However, let's be real, when it comes to big game atmospheres, neither Virginia Tech or Louisville can see Doak Campbell Stadium. It just so happens Virginia Tech wasn't a big game.
