FSU football: Tough luck, Destyn Hill out for 2024 season impact
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football wide receiver Destyn Hill can't seem to get things to go his way. A blue-chip wide receiver signee in the 2021 recruiting class had to wait two years before enrolling at FSU last summer. His arrival was celebrated by FSU fans, not because he was a talented prospect, but mainly because he overcame a situation many didn't expect to enroll at FSU. Hill worked diligently in summer and fall camp and was on the field in the season opener against LSU. He flashed a few times, but an injury derailed his freshman season, and now an injury suffered in spring camp will keep him out all of the 2024 season, according to a report by Noles247.
FSU lost its two best receivers to the 2024 NFL Draft, and Hill and sophomore Hykeem Williams were expected to be major contributors at the wide receiver position in 2024. Hill's expected contributions were still largely based on potential because there were so many unknown factors due to playing time limitations with the injury. However, it looked like he was taking steps to become a receiver FSU could find production from in 2024. The Noles added talented receivers Malik Benson and Jalen Brown from the transfer portal in the spring. Benson is recovering from an injury suffered in the Seminole Showcase but should be ready to go by fall camp.
FSU has veteran guys like Ja'Khi Douglas, Kentron Poitier, and Darion Williamson. However, the latter two didn't necessarily light the world on fire in the spring. The Noles have two talented freshmen early enrollees, Lawayne McCoy and Camden Frier looking to find playing time. Many folks expected 1-2 veteran receivers to enter the transfer portal, but that didn't happen, and this Hill injury may be a factor to consider. I expect FSU to run the ball more than last year, so I don't expect this injury to affect the offense too much. However, it hurts knowing this young man has been dealt another bad hand to overcome. I'd expect Malik Benson, Hykeem Williams, Ja'Khi Douglas, and tight end Kyle Morlock to produce the bulk of the receiving production. We could see more passes to the running backs like Lawarance Toafili and Jaylin Lucas as well. Here's to hoping Hill has a speedy recovery and can get on the field in 2025.
