FSU football: Top 15 most important defensive players for 2024 season
By Kelvin Hunt
No. 14 Blake Nichelson-LB
The linebacker position doesn't have the same importance in a defense as in years past. However, FSU lost its two best from the position a year ago, and there are questions on the depth chart once we get past the most experienced guy, DJ Lundy. FSU has several guys who could fill the position opposite of Lundy, and arguably, the most athletic guy is Blake Nichelson. Nichelson saw some time as a freshman last year but is still earning the linebacker position while adding the requisite size.
He likely still has a ways to earn starter reps, but he'll likely be on the field at some point. He has excellent coverage in space, but how effective will he be against the run? Will he consistently fill the right gaps? Will he be physical enough to get off blocks or not try to run around them? Will teams target him in the run game? The linebacker unit will likely take a small step back, but Nichelson's play will help determine the floor.
