The rumors of FSU heading to the Big 12 conference were just that. The rumors of FSU not having a home in the SEC or B1G were just that. However, one thing we knew was that FSU would need to announce their departure from the ACC by August 15 to avoid another season in the conference past 2024. It appears the latter is likely, according to a report on Monday:

This report probably disappoints most FSU football fans, but shouldn't be unexpected. I don't think anyone believed FSU would leave the ACC less than a year after filing their lawsuit in December 2023. Lawsuits of this magnitude take time and FSU not leaving the ACC before the 2025 season isn't a loss really, with the new 12-team playoff. FSU can still make the playoff while in the ACC if don't lose more than two games probably. They can still compete with SEC or B1G schools recruiting-wise for one more year. The biggest issue would be if FSU were still in the ACC in 2026 or beyond. Although FSU may not announce a departure by the August 15 deadline, they could announce any time after. Whether it be in January 2025 or in the summer of 2025. The announcement has to be before August 2025 to avoid spending the 2026 season remaining in the ACC. I would expect an announcement by August 2025 if I were a betting man. Also, another year in the ACC brings the exit cost down just a bit more, and all of that matters when we're talking about millions of dollars. I'm sure some ACC snobs will puff their chests out, but this isn't something folks in the know didn't already know. The FSU administration and lawyers are working to make the best financial decision possible for FSU. Just remain patient!
