FSU football: Should fans be worried about Norvell being a candidate at Bama?
FSU football had an exciting transfer portal pickup earlier in the afternoon where they acquired Oregon State defensive end Sione Lolohea. However, the talk of the college football landscape was centered around the retirement of legendary Alabama head football coach Nick Saban.
While I understand that this is ChopChat, and not TideChat, it is important to understand that Saban's decision to retire could have a direct impact on the Florida State Seminoles.
On February 8, 2023, the Seminoles extended head football coach Mike Norvell through 2029. According to a report from ESPN Senior Writer Adam Rittenberg, Norvell will earn an average of $8.05 million per year, which is the 14th-largest annual salary among college football coaches.
For reference, if he left FSU for another job, he would owe the university $4 million. This is certainly doable for a school like the Alabama Crimson Tide, who have won six national championships in Saban's tenure.
According to a report from ESPN Senior Writer Pete Thamel, Norvell could be a potential candidate for the Alabama Crimson Tide head football coaching job. However, it does seem like Oregon's Dan Lanning is the top option that they will likely go after.
Overall, Norvell has a ton of great things going for him at Florida State at this time. He has won 23 of his last 27 games, has found continuity within his coaching staff, developed the culture of the team in his vision, made stadium renovations as well as football-only facility construction plans, getting paid like a high-quality coach, possesses an athletic director that is very invested in the football program, and potentially having the Seminoles moved out of the ACC.
While it could be difficult to turn down a job opportunity by Crimson Tide given their track record of success over the past decade and a half, this could be a coach's nightmare to try and step into the shoes of a legendary coach.
I have a great feeling that Norvell likely return to Tallahassee for the 2024 season.
