SMU Mustangs (11-3, 8-0 AAC)

The SMU Mustangs is one of the three newest additions to the conference, but it's by far the best of those additions. The Mustangs have prospered under former Miami offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee in his two seasons as head coach. They went from seven wins in 2022 to 11 in 2023 and returned much of the nucleus from last year's team. They will face some stiffer competition on the 2024 schedule as they transition to the ACC.

They will face FSU and Louisville, but the remainder of their schedule should be manageable. One of the biggest differences between playing in the AAC and the ACC is in the trenches, and Lashlee has made an effort to bring reinforcements from the transfer portal in preparation. SMU is a team many ACC casual fans won't know much about, but they were legit in 2023.
