FSU football: Positional transfer needs this offseason for the Noles
DEFENSIVE BACK
Florida State first-year defensive backs coach Patrick Surtain Sr. did a phenomenal job with his position group where the Seminoles' defensive unit only allowed 170.4 passing yards per game (6th in the FBS). However, the secondary will have to replace the likes of redshirt senior contributors such as cornerbacks Renardo Green and Jarrian Jones as well as safety Akeem Dent.
Surtain Sr. had success with acquiring highly-touted prospects in the 2024 recruiting cycle with four-stars Charles Lester III, Jamari Howard, Cai Bates, and Ricky Knight III. I realize that fans are still disappointed with not being able to land five-star safety KJ Bolden, who flipped his commitment to the Georgia Bulldogs. But Surtain Sr. has set a nice foundation in Tallahassee.
With Green and Jones being gone at cornerback, Azareye'h Thomas and Fentrell Cypress II (if he does not declare for the NFL Draft) will be huge contributors next season. Defensive coordinator Adam Fuller loves to utilize defensive backs in his 4-2-5 defensive scheme. I don't believe the coaching staff would be opposed to adding another defensive back if the right fit came along.
