FSU football: Marvin Jones Jr. and Patrick Payton could be a scary sight in 2024
FSU football had to replace redshirt junior defensive end Jared Verse this offseason after he decided to declare in the 2024 NFL Draft. During his two-year playing career with the Seminoles, the talented pass rusher had 89 total tackles (29.5 for loss) and 18 sacks.
The former Albany transfer has been a pivotal piece on the defensive line for Florida State. The Seminoles have been a transfer portal destination with pass rushers such as Jermaine Johnson II, Keir Thomas, and Jared Verse.
Florida State seemingly struck again by acquiring Georgia sophomore defensive end transfer Marvin Jones Jr. this offseason. The fan base was very high on picking up the five-star prospect in the 2022 recruiting cycle. However, he elected to sign with the Georgia Bulldogs. During his two-year playing career with the Bulldogs, Jones Jr. recorded 16 tackles (5.5 for loss) and 2 sacks.
Even with the limited production, most individuals feel that he could emerge as a meaningful contributor for the Seminoles to pair alongside redshirt junior Patrick Payton.
On Tuesday night, Marvin Jones Jr. posted an edit (created by former Florida State graphic designer KCamp) on his Twitter account with him and Patrick Payton in the Seminoles' all-garnet uniform combination.
Patrick Payton had a moment this offseason where he considered entering the transfer portal. However, he elected to not go into the portal and stick with the Florida State Seminoles. The Miami (FL) native has had 75 tackles (20.5 for loss) and 12 sacks during the two years that he has played for the Seminoles.
Fans have to be excited to see the duo suit up in the garnet and gold. While it could be ridiculous to suggest that Jones Jr. could compare to his father (Marvin "Shade Tree" Jones Sr.) who played for Florida State from 1990-1992.
The 2024 season could be very beneficial for the two talented defensive ends.
