FSU football: ESPN's ranking Doak Campbell Stadium No. 19 is a joke
By Kelvin Hunt
It's a subject list from 14 college football writers at ESPN who ranked the 25 best college football stadiums. There were no parameters and no criteria to make the list(so why make one in the first place?). FSU's Doak Campbell Stadium finished at No. 19 out of the top 25. I suppose that's respectable, considering how many teams are in college football. However, it was the stadiums that finished ahead of Doak Campbell that makes this list the joke that it is. Here's the list:
- Tiger Stadium-LSU
- Rose Bowl-UCLA
- Michigan Stadium-Michigan
- Notre Dame Stadium-Notre Dame
- Beaver Stadium-Penn State
- Husky Stadium-Washington
- Ohio Stadium-Ohio State
- Camp Randall Stadium-Wisconsin
- Bryant-Denny Stadium-Alabama
- Neyland Stadium-Tennessee
- Memorial Stadium-Clemson
- Michie Stadium-Army
- Kyle Field-Texas A&M
- Autzen Stadium-Oregon
- Lane Stadium-Virginia Tech
- Memorial Stadium-Nebraska
- Jordan-Hare Stadium-Auburn
- Sanford Stadium-Georgia
- Doak Campbell Stadium-FSU
- Ben Hill Griffin Stadium-Florida
- Vaught-Hemingway Stadium-Ole MissL
- Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum-USC
- Kidd Brewer Stadium-Appalachian State
- Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium-Oklahoma
- Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium-Texas
Some of these places absolutely deserve to be in the top 10. I can't argue with several of them, but what I'll do is name the teams that don't deserve to be ahead of FSU:
- Washington
- Wisconsin
- Army
- Oregon
- Virginia Tech
I would FSU ahead of Nebraska, but I have to respect their fans for selling out every game despite the program's mediocrity for years. I'd like to put FSU ahead of
The historic games, great traditions, atmospheres, bronze sculptures representing key figures, and the Seminole Tribe make it a unique place. Not to mention, the stadium is the second largest continuous brick structure in the world, behind the Great Wall of China. I've been to Doak Campbell for 3:30 kickoffs against teams FSU is a large betting favorite. The atmosphere is still crazy, with the best entrance in college football with Chief Osceola and Renegade. However, night games against top opponents are arguably a top-five experience. FSU against Oklahoma in 2011, Notre Dame in 2014, and any rival game against Miami or Florida is must-experience stuff.
