FSU football: 5 players who could become difference makers with strong 2024 fall camp
By Kelvin Hunt
Byron Turner Jr.-DE
I've written about the depth at the defensive end position recently, but this might be the deepest they've been in the past decade. FSU has had talent at the position, but it's largely been unproven except for last season, with Jared Verse and Patrick Payton returning. Payton returns, and Oregon State transfer Sione Lolohea joins the program as a former All-Conference performer (Pac-12). Marvin Jones Jr. joins the fold and expects to be an impact guy, so that's three big-time guys at the defensive end position.
A guy who could change that position room and make it even more promising is Byron Turner Jr. I don't know who the starters will be, but I presume it'll be Payton and Jones, but Lolohea could be a starter too. If Byron Turner Jr. can take that next step, that would mean there wouldn't be much drop-off between the first and second-team guys. There was a noticeable drop-off when Verse and Payton were off the field last season. However, Turner saw a sizeable jump from 2022 to 2023 with 26 tackles, two for a loss, one sack, and four QB hurries. Turner is a guy to keep an eye on this fall.
