FSU football: 3 question marks in the aftermath of the Seminoles' loss versus GT
IS THE DEFENSIVE LINE NOT ELITE?
Florida State lost quality defensive linemen from last year's roster such as defensive end Jared Verse as well as defensive tackles Braden Fiske and Fabien Lovett Sr. They were three pivotal members of the defensive line and consistently brought pressure especially later in the year.
ESPN's Pete Thamel stated that Florida State's defensive line would be the best in the country for 2024. That is a bold claim for the starting rotation of Patrick Payton, Darrell Jackson Jr., Joshua Farmer, and Marvin Jones Jr.
Thamel was not the only one as several individuals went to the Seminoles' practices and they suggested that Florida State's defensive line would be a strength of the team. However, it did not look that way on Saturday afternoon as the defense only recorded two tackles for loss (none by defensive linemen) and had zero sacks.
This could be an overreaction from one game, but I wonder if the defensive line is considered an elite unit. Don't get me wrong, I really like the players on the starting unit but I wonder how they will perform against Clemson, Miami, Notre Dame, and Florida if they couldn't succeed against Georgia Tech.
