FSU football: 3 question marks in the aftermath of the Seminoles' loss versus GT
IS THERE A HEAVY COMMITMENT TO THE RUNNING GAME?
Florida State is having to replace the likes of running back Trey Benson, who was selected in the 2024 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals, where he recorded 1,800+ rushing yards and 23 touchdowns during his two seasons in Tallahassee.
The program brought in Alabama's Roydell Williams and Indiana's Jaylin Lucas via the transfer portal this offseason. While fans understand that they are not Benson, they are still talented athletes who can make defenders miss in space. Mike Norvell's offensive scheme is centered around the idea of running the football.
The opening 7-play, 75-yard drive for the Seminoles' opening drive of the game went as smoothly as it could get as Roydell Williams, Caziah Holmes, Jaylin Lucas, and Lawrance Toafili were successful in carries.
However, it started to rear its ugly head after that drive where the Seminoles had 24 carries for 48 rushing yards. There were times in the game when Norvell decided to run the ball on 3rd down and medium in hopes of going for it on fourth down and short.
However, with Georgia Tech stacking the box with defenders, it became increasingly difficult to establish the run. I commend Norvell for sticking to his offense's identity but it became very predictable at times (not telling the coaching staff what to do).
I hope they can find the right mixture of run/pass to have more success in the running game versus Boston College next week.
