Defensive First Downs Allowed

The FSU defense was outstanding for much of the 2023 season. They were among the best in not allowing third-down conversions, forcing turnovers, and points allowed per game. However, they faced way too many third-downs overall(198 total) tied for No. 123 nationally, and allowed 249 first downs (No. 60 nationally). However, 12.4 percent of those first downs allowed came via penalty (31 of 249). Whether it was pass interference, defensive holding, roughing the passer, or whatever penalty that provided an automatic first down for opposing offenses, FSU ranked No. 121.

I'll confess those numbers are likely impacted or skewed by ACC officials, who are notorious for penalizing FSU more than their opponents. However, it's an area that likely robbed the FSU offense of at least 1-2 more possessions per game. The FSU offense suffered many injuries last year that impacted production, especially once Jordan Travis got hurt. However, 1-2 more offensive possession per game would give the defense more of a break and the offense more opportunities to put up points.
