FSU Basketball: A FSU Fan's Guide to The Final Four
By Cole Maines
South Carolina Women
The South Carolina Gamecocks and head coach Dawn Staley have built quite the program in Columbia. With their dominant 36-0 perfect regular season and post season run, they look to add their third National Championship and second in four years.
Since program establsihment in 1923, South Carolina but truly began their modern era in 1974. With 20 trips to the big dance since 1982, the lady Gamecocks are truley just beginning to flourish.
This run includes four straight trips to the final four, which would be five had it not been for a lost season as the top ranked team during the COVID-19 pandemic. The program and coach claim a national title for that reason, but it is not recognized.
While most of the hype around the women's game surrounds large marketable names and personalities like Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, most analyst that cover college basketball favor them to continue their perfect season until it concludes with nets being cut down after another National Championship win.
Most fans also pick the Gamecocks to win it all as they are favored in 35.6 percent of brackets on ESPN. The next most picked team is Iowa at 28.8 percent, about a seven percent difference.
Dawn Staley has built one of the best programs in the country and they are fun to root for. Similar to UConn, South Carolina's dominance has somewhat been lost in the hype around some of the other names in women's basketball.
Rooting for the Gamecocks will probably lead to wins and make you feel good while also feeling like more of a hardcore fan for not buying into the hype around other teams.
