Former FSU RB Trey Benson conducting multi-day visit with the Cowboys
Florida State football had a phenomenal 2023 campaign where they accomplished an undefeated regular season and an ACC Championship. However, in 2024, they will have to replace several key contributors that made sizable differences.
One player that should be noted is running back Trey Benson, who recorded 310 carries for 1,896 yards and 23 touchdowns during his two-year playing career at Florida State. Coming in to Tallahassee, there were several individuals who were skeptical of his ability to be successful.
The former Oregon Duck had suffered a serious lower-body injury where he was only able to accumulate six carries for 22 yards and one touchdowns. Fans already saw what bringing in an injured transfer could do (quarterback McKenzie Milton). As a result, individuals were nervous about Benson not panning out.
Head football coach Mike Norvell had a rich tradition of having successful running backs during his time at Memphis as well as Florida State. Benson certainly made a believer in the doubters as he continued to put his head down and work for everything that he had.
Norvell's offensive scheme revolved around the ability to effectively run the football. Benson took advantage of that especially when quarterback Jordan Travis suffered a season-ending injury. There were times when he would generate explosive plays to keep the offense electric.
The feel-good story does not stop there for the former Oregon transfer as he declared for the 2024 NFL Draft. He performed well at the NFL Scouting Combine where he ran a 4.39 40-yard dash. This type of performance certainly generated attention to NFL teams across the league.
According to a report from NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Benson will be visiting the Dallas Cowboys today (April 3rd) and tomorrow (April 4th).
This would be great to see Benson potentially being a second-round pick. He has worked very hard to get where he is today. It would certainly shed a positive light on the coaching staff for believing in his abilities.
