Defensive ends coach John Papuchis raves about transfer Sione Lolohea
Florida State football is having to replace the likes of ultra-talented pass rusher Jared Verse, who was selected in the first round by the Los Angeles Rams in the 2024 NFL Draft. The Seminoles have had a recent history of churning out productive players at the position.
Verse recorded 89 tackles (29.5 for loss) and 18 sacks during his two seasons in Tallahassee. It will not be an easy task to replace his production. The Seminoles still have rising superstar Patrick Payton at the defensive end position though. The Miami, Florida native had 44 tackles (14.5 for loss) seven sacks, and ten pass break ups.
It begs the question: Who will the coaching staff pair alongside Payton?
The coaching staff decided to add Georgia's Marvin Jones Jr. and Oregon State's Sione Lolohea for the defensive end position.
Jones Jr's name gets noticed by the majority of the fanbase given that his father (Marvin "Shade Tree" Jones Sr.) played linebacker for the Seminoles in the 1990s. However, Lolohea's name should be monitored as well.
The former Oregon State Beaver started all 13 games during the 2023 season where he had 47 tackles (8.5 for loss) and 1.5 sacks. Florida State defensive ends coach John Papuchis met with the media after Wednesday's practice where he stated that Lolohea is a tough, physical presence especially in the run game.
This is important considering that Florida State ranked 70th in the FBS in rushing yards allowed per game (152.2). The former Oregon State transfer could provide help in that area of stopping opposing teams on the ground during the 2024 season.
Stopping the run could be a strength for Florida State with Lolohea in the lineup. This could allow the linebackers to be more aggressive in their run fits. I cannot wait to see the former Oregon State transfer perform in the garnet and gold.
