Alabama transfer Malik Benson could emerge as a number-one receiver option in 2024
Florida State is entering a new environment with losing star-studded wide receivers Johnny Wilson and Keon Coleman as both of them declared for the 2024 NFL Draft. They combined for 91 receptions for 1,375 yards and 13 touchdowns last season.
The elite playmakers were an opposing team defensive back's worst nightmare. There was a major size mismatch as Coleman was listed as 6'4" while Wilson was 6'7", respectively. It was times when quarterback Jordan Travis decided to throw it up and allow his playmakers to excel.
Unfortunately, Travis is no longer in Tallahassee. Florida State's coaching staff decided to explore the idea of securing a bridge signal-caller to help the younger options on the roster such as Brock Glenn, Luke Kromenhoek, and Trever Jackson.
They elected to go with former Clemson and Oregon State transfer DJ Uiagalelei. While Uiagalelei is a polarizing option, he is a strong-armed quarterback with a good pocket presence. The Seminoles have to find talented pieces in the room.
Wide receivers coach Ron Dugans added prospects such as Camdon Frier, BJ Gibson, Lawayne McCoy, and Elijah Moore via the recruiting trail. Plus, the Seminoles added Malik Benson (Alabama) and Jalen Brown (LSU) to the transfer portal.
Understandably, the discussion amongst the fanbase surrounds players such as Hykeem Williams, Vandrevius Jacobs, Destyn Hill, and Kentron Poitier. But who will be the number one wide receiver in the offense?
I believe that Malik Benson will be the number-one option this upcoming season. Head football coach Mike Norvell has consistently gone after the Crimson Tide after the playoff committee decided to place a one-loss Alabama team over an undefeated Florida State, declined the offer to coach the Crimson Tide, and then took their players that transferred out.
Norvell shared his thoughts about Benson where he stated that he has been very excited about what he has seen from him after Tour of Duty workouts.
During the 2023 season for the Crimson Tide, Benson recorded 13 receptions for 162 yards and one touchdown. I realize that it is tough to ask the senior wide receiver to become a top option. However, he has all the intangible to be successful.
I think Norvell will utilize more quick slants and screens to get Benson involved in the offense. This could be a committee approach at wide receiver since there are so many talented options in the position room.
