It hurt to lose a piece like veteran safety Akeem Dent as he graduated and went to the NFL. Dent was the quarterback on the defense from last season. When the senior went down with an injury, you could tell the communication was missing and they looked out of sorts.

With missing Dent in 2024, the coaching staff thought that veteran Shyheim Brown could be the voice of the defense. The former three-star prospect has been a consistent piece in the unit where he is the leader in tackles so far.

Brown even got injured and missed the matchup versus Memphis. During that game, former four-star prospect KJ Kirkland from Jacksonville, Florida, emerged as a starter. Kirkland impressed during fall camp but had battled with injuries and inconsistencies.

Kirkland has accumulated 17 total tackles this season and could continue to grow as the starting safety (or at least a sold piece) next to veteran Shyheim Brown. I want to see if he can be a starter in 2025 for Florida State.
