Let me start by saying that it has been a difficult day for Tallahassee, as today's tragedy struck the nation. My thoughts go out to all of those impacted. All athletic events are cancelled for the weekend. The event is bigger than sports, but I will bring informative news to add a bit of normalcy back to the community.
ESPN reported this morning that legendary College Gameday personality and former Florida State football player Lee Corso will be retiring from the network, effective August 30th. This was probably something that was in the making as Corso dealt with a variety of health issues.
He was known for headgear picks at the end of the College Gameday show. It brought joy to many individuals who wanted him to select their school.
For those individuals who didn't know, Corso played for the Seminoles from 1953-1956 and was elected into the Florida State Football Hall of Fame in 1978. He was an absolute baller back in his day, where he recorded 14 interceptions in his four-year career with Florida State.
Plus, he collected 2,650 all-purpose yards and 19 total touchdowns at quarterback, running back, wide receiver, and kickoff/punt returner.
It was always a joy to see him come back to Tallahassee. However, College Gameday hasn't come to Tallahassee much over the past decade as the program has struggled with consistency on the field.
With that said, Corso's last game will be on August 30th. This should be a no-brainer selection to allow him to be in Tallahassee as the Seminoles face off against the likes of the Alabama Crimson Tide.
There will be noteworthy games on the 30th, such as LSU/Clemson, Tennessee/Syracuse, and Texas/Ohio State. I know that the Texas/Ohio State game will be heavily considered, but if Florida State/Alabama isn't the selection, it would be disappointing.
I get that the Seminoles were 2-10 in 2024, but the love, support, and ovation that Corso would get in Tallahassee would be something bittersweet that all of the nation would love to see. Besides, the Florida State football fan in me would love to see that give this Seminole team extra motivation to defeat Alabama at home.
Please College Gameday... Make the right decision with this!
