The Miami Hurricanes defeated Notre Dame in the 2025 season opener, and that game was the deciding factor in who received one of the final spots in the College Football Playoffs. It’s simple: the two teams played, and one team won, and the other lost.
One team is a member of the ACC, and the other team isn’t a member of the ACC in football. Common sense would tell you it's in the best interest of the ACC to advocate for the team that’s a full member of the conference to make the College Football Playoff. However, Notre Dame is upset that the ACC did such a thing:
Bevacqua is furious with the ACC.

"We were mystified by the actions of the conference, to attack their biggest business partner in football and a member conference in 24 sports.
"They have done permanent damage to the relationship between the conference and Notre Dame."
We have no love for the ACC as a Florida State site. We don’t root for the ACC like the clown fans in the SEC rooting for their conference. We’ll never root for Miami to win anything, but Miami beat them on the field straight up. Neither played in a conference championship game, so you have to use the head-to-head matchup. It’s not the ACC’s fault that ESPN had Notre Dame ahead of Miami in all of their CFP projections for weeks and switched them on the final night.

Notre Dame acts like all of its sports teams offer value. They are terrible in basketball and baseball. ACC teams can easily find games to replace them in every other sport and not miss a beat in sports that generate revenue. Notre Dame acting like this is simply a school wanting their cake and eating it too. Join a conference like everyone else. BYU has more of a gripe about missing the College Football Playoff than Notre Dame. It didn’t help them to join a conference, but at least they are not whining about it.
Also, FSU averaged more viewers per game than Notre Dame this season, with a 5-7 record, while Notre Dame was getting a love fest from ESPN for beating a bunch of scrub teams. Nobody cares you’re mad, Notre Dame, and take the rest of your scrub teams elsewhere for all we care.
