FSU defensive coaches dealt with several injuries to its secondary during the spring after not taking any defensive backs in the Winter Transfer Portal window.

After assessing spring camp, the coaches determined they probably needed help within that unit and have looked to add at the cornerback and safety positions.

FSU added one of the better cornerback options with Jeremiah Wilson last week and added another player at safety on Friday. Former USC defensive back Jarvis Boatwright Jr. announced his commitment to the Noles after visiting. Boatwright was a target for the previous defensive staff in the 2024 recruiting cycle and had an offer from Tony White while at Nebraska.

Boatwright didn't record any stats as a redshirt freshman last season and will have four years of eligibility remaining. However, the former three-star recruit has good size and length at 6'2" and 195 pounds.

I would have preferred someone with more experience and production, but whoever FSU added at this point would have to learn the defense anyway, unless they were like Wilson and had already played for White previously.

The upside with Boatwright is he's physically ready and has four years of eligibility remaining.

He spoke with Noles247 after committing and said, "I don't care what defensive position I play. I just have to go into the defense and make a play. It is versatile, I can see now. There are three safeties in it."

The safety position is important in Tony White's defense, especially coming downhill against the running game. FSU has Shyheim Brown and Earl Little as likely starters, with KJ Kirkland, Ashlynd Barker, and Conrad Hussey in the mix, especially if the latter gets healthy.

Brown missed nearly all of spring camp, so depth at the safety position is of importance. This is a solid addition, likely without a crazy price tag.
