Michael Alford's comments should have Mike Norvell concerned about his days at FSU

The Seminoles athletic director believes FSU football is set up well for the future with or without their head coach

Sometimes you can read a lot from a quote and if that's the case, Michael Alford is saying a ton.

Alford, FSU's embattled athletic director, spoke with reporters during the ACC spring meetings, and it didn't take long for the questions about the Seminoles' struggles on the football field to come up. His answer to these questions was interesting and could say a lot about how much confidence he has in head coach Mike Norvell.

That was one part of the answer and another might've been an indication of where Alford's concerns are at right now.

"Well, every year is important, and going into it, we've given the program the resources with the new facilities, financially, invested in the coaching staff, invested in the front office," Alford said. "So go out and evaluate players and get the best players that Florida State can go get."

Alford might not have been trying to send as clear a message as he did, but he's suggesting that the money invested in the facilities, the on-field staff, support staff and front office were the things that Norvell wanted and that meant he was going to have less for player acquisition.

Mike Norvell should not feel good about his future at FSU

There's no secret Norvell is on the hot seat this year and there's little doubt that if Alford could've fired him after last season, he would have. But the buyout was steep and the Seminole boosters weren't willing to pay Norvell a ton of money not to coach, hire a new coach for a ton of money and guarantee that the new coach had comparable resources to what the other "blue bloods" are spending on players. That, however, was last year. Another bad season from Norvell and he's getting fired regardless of how much a regime change will cost.

Norvell clearly wanted more money for himself and his coaches after the 2023 season. He got what he wanted, and it turned out to be a disaster on all fronts. The 2024 FSU football season was historically bad and Norvell had to fire both coordinators, Adam Fuller and Alex Atkins, just 10 months after making sure they got big raises. That FSU roster wasn't cheap either. Quarterback DJ Uiagalelei and defensive end Marvin Jones Jr. were not bargain-rate acquisitions, nor was keeping Patrick Payton. None of it worked out and all the cache that Norvell accumulated over the previous two seasons was gone overnight.

By then, the plans for a stadium renovation and the FSU football building were well in motion and now those projects are done. Aflord also brought in John Garrett as GM of Player Personnel, a familiar face who has worked with Norvell in the past. These are all things that Norvell wanted, and maybe it speaks to his failure to see the forest from the trees. Players are what drives the ship and, in the current environment of college football, if you don't have the resources to compete with the top talent, it doesn't matter how strong the brand is or how nice the locker rooms are.

Alford believes that FSU football is set up for long-term success. Whether you agree or disagree is another discussion, but as far as he's concerned, it's all on Norvell to make it work what he's got.
