FSU football coaches look to put the finishing touches on their transfer portal recruiting class for the winter window.

The linebacker position is one where FSU needs at least one more player, and had a target on campus earlier this week with Georgia Southern's Marques Watson-Trent.

The ultra-productive linebacker tallied over 100 tackles each of the last three years and was the SunBelt Player of the Year.

However, he visited Nebraska after FSU and decided to commit to the Cornhuskers on Saturday afternoon.

I've seen some FSU fans whine and complain that FSU missed its top linebacker target, but that's likely not the case. While Watson-Trent was ultra-productive at the lower levels, he was smaller and had that productive against weaker competition. The fact he committed to Nebraska and not a top school should tell you all you need to know.

FSU has another top linebacker target on campus this weekend with Memphis's Elijah Herring. He is taller and has better length than Watson-Trent and has been productive against better competition.

He tallied 80 tackles in his sophomore year at Tennessee before transferring to Memphis, where he had 60 tackles in 11 games, including 10 in the bowl game against West Virginia.

Mike Norvell continues to have relationships with his former coaches at Memphis and can easily give them a call to get the scoop on what Herring is like as a player. That information could be invaluable as they look to fill an important spot in the lineup.

If the coaching staff wanted Trent-Watson, they probably would have gotten him to cancel his visit to Nebraska like they got Duce Robinson to cancel his Louisville visit.

The coaching staff has a plan just be patient and see how it shakes out.
