Kevin Sperry put on a show and got FSU fans excited about 2026 quarterback race

Did Kevin Sperry already make himself the frontrunner to be the FSU starting quarterback in 2026?

The true freshman was the first quarterback off the bench Saturday in the 77-3 win over East Texas A&M. He quickly drove the Seminoles down the field and threw a short touchdown pass to Jayvan Boggs before the half. After Brock Glenn had the first series in the second half, Sperry returned and threw a second touchdown pass, this one to Ousmane Kromah.

Sperry completed four of his five passes for 61 yards and two touchdowns. It was also notable that he entered the game before Glenn. Is that a sign of where the depth chart stands? Or maybe it's because Glenn is more of a known commodity at this point. It's not clear why it happened.

Kevin Little and Adam Brown from X's and Noles did a film breakdown on Sperry's first action and were very impressed with what he showed. You can watch the full breakdown here.

"This was his first real game action, obviously, as a true freshman. I thought it was interesting that he came in before Brock Glenn. I don't know if you want to read anything into that or not," Brown said, "I thought he looked more than capable, maybe that's being...almost downplay-ish, but he seemed to have poise, he put the ball where it needed to be, he seemed to handle it very well."

Could FSU go with another transfer QB in 2026?

The quarterback situation at FSU looks decent. Castellanos is listed as a senior and there have been rumblings about him trying to get an extra year, but also rumblings about him really trying to use this season to prove he has some NFL skill level, so let's just assume he's gone after this season.

In today's landscape there are no guarantees, but I feel good saying Sperry will be back and eyeing the starting role. Glenn feels like less of a guarantee. He'll be heading into his redshirt junior year, and he's always just seemed more of a bridge player to someone else. I could certainly see him entertaining more promising opportunities at the G5 or FCS level after this season. Jaden O'Neal is the incoming prospect. FSU flipped the composite four-star player from Oklahoma in mid-June.

If Castellanos doesn't come back and Glenn transfers, FSU isn't going to go into 2026 with two arms on scholarship. Not a chance. So, that almost guarantees that Mike Norvell and Gus Malzahn will look for a transfer.
