The expectations for Florida State softball pitcher Jazzy Francik in year two were off the charts after an outstanding freshman season. However, she has struggled with her control for much of the year, which was a strength a year ago.

Those struggles resulted in way more walks and runs allowed than expected, which seemed to come to a head during Florida State’s three-game sweep against Stanford.

I wrote about her struggles to that point on social media:

Florida State needed Francik to elevate her game, and she's done that an more since the Stanford series.

Francik threw 2.2 innings against Stanford, allowing four hits, six walks, two strikeouts, and five earned runs. She took the loss in two of the three games, but she has flipped a switch to find her form from last year since that weekend.

Francik has thrown two no-hitters (Georgia Tech and Boston College) since that weekend, pitching 33 innings, allowing 20 hits, 12 walks, and 22 strikeouts, and allowing only 8 earned runs. What makes it more impressive is that she did so while facing offenses like Florida, North Carolina, and Georgia Tech. Those offenses all have team batting averages well over .300 with lots of home runs.

The walks are still a tad bit much to my liking, but it’s a massive improvement over where she was earlier in the year. Opposing batters are only hitting .187 against her now. She’s doing an overall better job of staying out of hitter counts(only allowed five extra base hits) since the Stanford series.

Francik and Ashtyn Danley are the two most experienced pitchers returning for the Noles and were thought to be the key to how far FSU could go in 2026. Danley has been solid all year, especially considering she’s a two-way player. Francik’s re-emergence could give Florida State the boost it needs to win the ACC regular season title and compete as a regional host. I still don’t think they have the overall firepower to compete for a national title, but they look like a better team over the past few weeks, largely because Francik’s been much better inside the circle.
