Florida State stepped back on the practice field this week, and the Seminoles are picking things up in preparation for the 2026 campaign. After another losing season, they need everyone to step it up, and head coach Mike Norvell knows it.
During Friday's practice, Florida State put on shells for the first time, and freshman receiver Jasen Lopez is someone who caught Norvell's eye.
"Jasen Lopez had a really good day today. I think he had three big plays throughout it. You're seeing the continued growth of that receiving corps," Norvell said during his post-practice presser.
Liam Rooney of the Tallahassee Democrat posted a video of Lopez making a nice toe-tap grab on the sideline during practice, and that could be one of the plays that Norvell decided to highlight. And these comments are the latest example of Norvell displaying his confidence in the freshman's ability.

During Norvell's preseason presser, Norvell expressed his excitement around Lopez and fellow freshman receiver Devin Carter. In that media session, he made it clear that they have a real chance to play early and often for the Seminoles.
"I think you might ask me a question in spring; it's a quick, immediate yes. It hasn't changed. They've got to go do it. Once again, where that role is, is definitely on them, but there's been nothing that I've seen from them," Norvell said per Chris Nee of Noles247.
The fact that Norvell said this on July 27th and, several days later, he's still speaking highly about Lopez is outstanding. It shows that the work Lopez has put in is working in his favor, and he needs to continue keeping his foot on the gas.
He was a four-star recruit and played his high school football at Chaminade-Madonna in Miami, Florida. During his high school career, Lopez was a dynamic weapon. He tallied 320 receptions for 5,379 receiving yards and 61 touchdowns.
Lopez finished with 1,000-plus receiving yards and 10-plus scores from his freshman to senior year. In addition, he was so good that he played varsity as an 8th grader.
The Florida native is listed at 6-foot, 180 pounds, so he won't blow anyone away with his physical ability. Despite that, his route running is where he will consistently win. He can easily gain separation and has the strength to make some tough catches through traffic.
Those skills are always transferable and should give the Seminoles a weapon who could quickly become a focal point in the passing game. Every fan knows the aerial attack will run through Duce Robinson, but this offense needs multiple outlets.
Since Norvell is the playcaller again, tight ends are expected to be heavily involved in the game plan. And while that should help the offense in both the run and pass game, Lopez seems to be a weapon that will have a role in 2026.
He needs to continue progressing like this, and if he does, Florida State won't be able to keep him off the field.
