Former Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston is back in a starting role in the NFL following a season-ending injury to Jaxson Dart. The New York Giants have liked what they have seen from Winston in the past and inked an extension earlier in the year.
Now, a new quarterback has entered the picture for the Giants after a successful trade with the Minnesota Vikings was completed. Pressure is on Winston to perform at a winning level with more depth in the quarterback room, but if you just tried to judge the situation based on his attitude, you would be met with an abundance of smiles and confidence.
Winston is the starter for the Giants at the moment, and he is not letting anyone, including the media, forget that. In between the moments of serious confidence, Winston has also made sure that his new teammate, fellow quarterback JJ McCarthy, is aware that he is welcomed with open arms.
Some may view McCarthy as competition, but Winston has stressed that helping the team win is his top priority, even if that means sliding back into the reserve role in the future.
Jameis Winston on whether QB1s should share reps with the backups so they’re better prepared if called upon.

And Jameis made sure to clear one thing up after they kept referring to him as the backup. 💪💪

Winston put together a historic 27-game career with the Florida State Seminoles during the 2013 and 2014 seasons. His start in the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was one filled with positives and negatives, but his stops with New Orleans, Cleveland, and the New York Giants since have defined him.
Former Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston could be the veteran presence needed to help shape JJ McCarthy
Plenty of concerns have surrounded Winston in the past few weeks as the 32-year-old has struggled to replicate some of the flair he previously had. The concerns are valid after Winston previously posted multiple 4,000-yard passing seasons, but at the cost of 114 career interceptions, including a 30-interception season in 2019. However, Winston is reinventing himself on and off the field, and given the circumstances, that could be just what the Giants need.
McCarthy can be a solid quarterback at times, but his young NFL career has largely been defined by interceptions and fumbles. McCarthy was given the 2025 season to prove himself with the Vikings, and when the 2026 season came around, the young quarterback did not have enough to take the starting job away from Kyler Murray.
The Giants did not just trade for McCarthy as a safety net behind Winston, but additionally because the current staff and quarterback room can help McCarthy grow. Winston previously stated that his job is to "give the team the best chance to win" and that he is also willing to help "groom" McCarthy into a starting-caliber player.
For some quarterbacks, replacing the injured Jaxson Dart would offer a chance to put up serious stats against opposing teams. However, Winston signed an extension to remain with the Giants, knowing he likely would not see much of the field. Winston has been changing himself as a player to increase his longevity in the league, and that type of commitment could be exactly what allows the quarterback to stick around much longer.
