Instant reactions to Florida State's awful loss to Clemson in Week 9

Another week, another loss for Florida State as coach Mike Norvell has recorded a three-game losing streak in six of his seven seasons in Tallahassee. From start to finish, Florida State did not look like the stronger team, and the Seminoles have recorded a fifth loss for the fifth time in Norvell's tenure.

Just a few days ago, President Richard McCullough published a three-page letter that admitted the results have not been up to par, but the program would ultimately move forward with Norvell. Disaster struck against Clemson as the coach handily lost his first game since the letter was published, which pretty much sums up the entire season in one sequence.

The loss to Clemson is honestly a puzzling one since even with an injury-filled roster, Florida State was considered the better team top to bottom. The Tigers got the win they needed after a difficult stretch, and the Seminoles need to go back to the drawing board once again.

Florida State still does not have an identity after eight games in 2026

Whether the Seminoles are winning or losing this season, one thing has stayed the same throughout each game for the team. Florida State does not have an identity, which is an issue that has plagued the team for multiple seasons now. There is nothing the team does extremely well consistently, and to make matters worse, it has taken multiple games at times this season for improvement to be seen.

Florida State generated virtually no pressure before finishing with double-digit sacks in the win over Virginia. Since then, the defensive line in particular has looked much better, but the issue is that those types of improvements need to happen quicker to prevent the losing environment from growing. The Seminoles have constantly gone back to the drawing board this season to try and find a winning recipe, which put the team in a 3-4 hole coming into the game against Clemson.

It is great to see the team improve in certain areas during the season, like the defensive line, but Florida State cannot stack losses each season before figuring out what is meshing properly.

The defensive line has been clicking, but has the success been enough to make a difference?

The Seminoles clearly have found a way to make an impact along the defensive line; now, the staff needs to do something with that success. Often, the success of one position can bleed into another, but that has not been the case for the team this season.

Again, it is nice to see improvements being made on the field, but Florida State is at a point where improving one position is not enough to help instill new winning ways. The secondary is still a mess, even when the unit has been relatively healthy, the linebackers are being held together by a thread, and the miscommunications across the board are still just as clear as they were in Week 0.

Nobody can confidently say that this team, in particular this defense, is prepared to face the strongest teams each week. I am not expecting dominance, but it is hard to be confident when the glimpses of improvement are drowned out by consistent mistakes and regression in different areas.

Mike Norvell still cannot deliver a clean, consistent product on the field this season

Florida State opted to retain Norvell as the coach after two losing seasons in a row, so everyone knew what the program was getting into the season. However, the issue is that Florida State still does not want to move on from Norvell, and the results on the field have not been getting any better for the team.

Wins and losses aside, the Seminoles have looked like a different team each week under the guidance of Norvell, which is simply unacceptable when the team needs to show signs of consistent improvement. Consistency has been the enemy of the Seminoles this season, between disastrous collapses and an uninspired team taking the field at times. The game against Louisville is a prime example of how this team cannot sustain any level of success after looking like a cohesive unit the game prior.

Norvell's entire tenure with Florida State has been up and down, but over the course of three seasons now, the team has regressed across the board from what the coach was once able to produce. Aside from the game against Virginia, Florida State has been unable to look like a strong, worry-free team that consistently performs, regardless of the opponent.

The primary concern with moving forward with Norvell once again involves the lack of a product on the field that fans can truly believe in. Norvell's teams often look sluggish, unprepared, or weak as the game progresses. If Norvell cannot get his team to play a competitive game from start to finish each week, regardless of the record, then returning to competing for championships may never be reached.
