Florida State women's basketball team gets a massive victory over the No. 20 ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on the road Sunday afternoon. The Seminoles' leading scorer was guard Sydney Bowles, who had 32 points (11 of 23 field goal attempts) with six assists and four rebounds.
This is a prime example of stepping up when your teammates need you the most. Bowles heading into the matchup, where she averaged 10.4 points per game. The Seminoles needed a spark to their offensive game with missing guards Ta'Niya Latson and O'Mariah Gordon.
Latson leads the entire country in scoring, while Gordon has been an offensive weapon as of late. The Seminoles could not afford to drop another contest as they inch closer to the NCAA Tournament. The more concerning aspect of it all is the status of Latson's injury. How serious is it? Florida State is not the same squad without her services.
Latson and forward Makayla Timpson had been huge to the Seminoles' success this season. Timpson did not disappoint versus the Yellow Jackets as she did all of the dirty work with 19 points, 16 rebounds, three assists, and three blocks.
Florida State women's basketball fell out of the top 25 rankings after losing to North Carolina State and Louisville by double digits, but this win over Georgia Tech could propel them back in the standings as they sit with a 22-6 overall record.
It won't get any easier for the Seminoles as they take on the No. 1 ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish on the road Thursday at 8 PM EST on the ACC Network. If Florida State wants to be victorious, Latson and Gordon need to be healthy and contribute at a high level.
Nonetheless, this was a great win for the Seminoles after they were short-handed.
