FSU will likely give this SEC defensive lineman a look when he enters the portal

Most of the attention for FSU's transfer portal action will be around quarterback and whether Mike Norvell decides to go after one, swing for a fence on a top-tier player at the position, or simply find more quality depth to compete with the guys currently on the roster.

Once the quarterback situation is settled, FSU should target the trenches. The offensive line will need to be rebuilt after losing the top six guys and the defensive line could probably use 1-2 veteran players to provide solid depth.

One target that could be in play as a high-upside depth piece is LSU's Ahmad Breaux, who recently announced his attention to enter the portal.

Breaux fits the FSU transfer acquisition model

When you think about how FSU has gone about its process of acquiring talent in the transfer portal, the staff tends to look at guys that could elevate the floor and have upside as a full-time starter. They aren't going to spend the $1.5-$2 million dollars like Texas Tech did for Lee Hunter, but they could make a very competitive offer for a player like Breaux, who is looking for an opportunity to become a starter.

Breaux has some things that the FSU staff generally likes. He comes from an SEC program where he's held a backup role for two years and also played some special teams. At 6-foot-3, 278 pounds, Breaux has spent two years in an amazing strength program at LSU and would be ready to play.

There's also an intriguing scheme fit with Tony White's defense. Breaux was recruited as a edge rusher/outside linebacker and grew into more of a defensive tackle. In a 3-3-5 scheme, you need bigger defensive ends that can set the edge and Breaux likely possesses some of those instincts.

This strategy has had hits and misses

FSU has hit with this strategy on the defensive line with guys like Jermaine Johnson (Georgia) and Fabien Lovett (Mississippi State), with the former winning ACC Defensive of the Year in 2022 and the latter being an integral part of the best Seminole teams in the 2020s.

While Johnson and Lovett were bit hits, Marvin Jones Jr. (Georgia) was a much larger risk and did not work out. So far, Jayson Jenkins (Tennessee) has not worked out either.

But this is the game that FSU plays when it comes to acquiring talent through the portal. Going after a player like Breaux makes sense because he has some production on tape already and if the staff believe he can raise his game to a higher level, expect them to be interested.
