Can they do it is the biggest question

Florida State has lost nearly 40 players to the transfer portal, while acquiring 13 new additions since it opened on January 2nd. FSU has met some needs, though it may not be with the top options from the transfer portal. They’ve done a solid job of replenishing the offensive line after losing all five starters from last year.

They added an excellent option at running back with Tre Wisner and some solid pieces in the defensive secondary. The addition at tight end is solid, while retaining Landen Thomas. FSU retaining Ja’Bril Rawls and Ashlynd Barker was big. The option at quarterback fits the system, but it felt like FSU settled there.

Our guy Norvell Central graded the transfer portal acquisitions so far here.

FSU must be willing to spend some money to acquire quality defensive players or retaining who they have.

Here are the positions FSU needs to nail if they want to call this transfer portal recruiting cycle anywhere near a success:

They must retain the Desir Twins and Kevin Wynn, or at least the twins. They don’t have much depth at defensive tackle, and need to bring in a guy, even if they keep two of the three.

FSU needs help at linebacker badly, and it looks like they have a productive guy visiting once the dead period ends. I wouldn’t be mad if they took two productive guys at this position.

FSU needs help at pass rusher, something serious. They added a rotational-type guy from Texas A&M, but they need a true difference maker if they can find one somewhere. They also need a field goal kicker since Jake Weinberg entered the transfer portal. The new special teams coach will likely help with that.

FSU has done a solid job on the offensive side. The retention of Jayvan Boggs, Duce Robinson, and Micahi Danzy was big. If they can sure up the trenches on defense, I’d like this transfer portal haul a lot better. The transfer portal is in a dead period but will re-open later this week before closing in January 16th.
