FSU football coaches slowly played the spring transfer portal window but finally broke through with their first commitment on Friday evening. It's at an immediate need with Houston's Jeremiah Wilson.
Better yet, Wilson played in Tony White's defense while a freshman at Syracuse before transferring to Houston before last season.
He's rated as one of the better corners nationally, has tons of experience, and has one year of eligibility left. He can play in a zone or man scheme. Wilson originally hails from Kissimmee, Florida, and lists at 5'10" and 180 pounds.
How Wilson Immediately Upgrades The FSU Secondary
FSU has tons of talent but not much-proven experience, those young guys have dealt with injuries and played mostly in press-man coverage last year. It's been a transition into Tony White's multiple scheme and having someone like Wilson gives FSU an immediate contributor who can also help these younger players continue that transition.
Wilson plays with great physicality despite not having elite height and length. That's one weakness we've seen from FSU corners. The inability to get off blocks to make tackles on screenplays consistently has been maddening. Wilson also has a knack for getting interceptions, nabbing four last season while breaking up four passes.
He had interceptions against Oklahoma and Kansas State and two against Baylor, returning one for a touchdown.
FSU's patience in the portal paid off big time. I'd expect him to start at one of the corner positions, given his experience and familiarity with the defense. He didn't transfer in the spring window with one year of eligibility remaining to be a rotational guy.
FSU may look to take a safety but will surely take at least one wide receiver and possibly an offensive and defensive lineman. This first commitment could give the coaches the momentum needed to fill the remaining needs they have.
