The transfer portal officially opened on Friday, and Florida State wasted no time getting some of its top targets on campus this weekend. FSU has several needs in the trenches, quarterback, secondary, tight end, and other areas.
One of the things that stood out regarding the first wave of targets has been experience, production, and relationships with coaches on the staff. Some of the names associated with interest in FSU:
- Rocky Beers-TE (Production)
- Xavier Townsend-WR/RB/PR (Production and started his career at UCF with Gus Malzahn)
- John Walker-DT (Experience and production, and played for Malzahn at UCF)
- Bryant Williams-OT (Experience and production)
- Jaquez White-CB (Experience and production)
- Tyler Brown-S (Experience and production)
- Paul Bowling-OL (Experience and production)
- Ben Murawski-OL(Experience and production)
- Nehemiah Chandler-CB (Experience and production)
- Zylan Perry-RB (Experience and production)
Some of these players have more than one year of eligibility remaining, which helps build long-term depth at certain positions (while young guys continue to develop). As you can see, FSU is looking to address the trenches and its secondary early in the transfer process. FSU continues to work on its quarterback situation, and it’ll be interesting if they can get one of their top two targets who are visiting other places before visiting FSU.
FSU did a great job retaining the core of its defensive secondary, which means they can be selective at those positions. The transfer portal will close on January 16th, and there’s no spring portal window like in past years. The best players will likely lock into the spots they choose to sign with in the first week or so. Hopefully, FSU will have most of its top targets locked in by then.
