FSU football: Fans react to linebacker Stefon Thompson addition from Transfer Portal
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football coaches have had a steady stream of transfer portal visitors since the portal opened on Monday.
I mentioned the biggest needs from the transfer portal in this piece, and FSU added a player for one of those on Saturday.
Former Nebraska linebacker Stefon Thompson announced his commitment to the Noles while on campus.
We knew FSU would be in play for several former Nebraska players since that's where all of the new defensive coaching staff came from.
Thompson has been with new FSU defensive coordinator Tony White since his Syracuse days. He has been in the same defensive system for five years with varying production. He lists at 6'1" and 240 pounds with almost 200 career tackles and 20 tackles for a loss.
He brings a physical presence and toughness and should help fast-track the FSU players who'll be new in the defensive scheme. I know fans get caught up in recruiting stars, but this is a guy who FSU showed interest in this spring before he ultimately went to Nebraska.
Fan Reaction
Thompson didn't see as many snaps at Nebraska as his time at Syracuse. However, he graded out well on PFF and would have been the best linebacker via those metrics by far at FSU. I like the pickup because he likely didn't break the bank and there isn't a price you can put on familiarity and toughess, when looking to install a new defense. FSU needs depth at the position and this is a good take by the staff.
