FSU football: Bettors heavily favoring Blue Devils over Noles in Friday night game
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football will travel to Durham, North Carolina, for a game against the Duke Blue Devils on Friday night. Both teams had bye weeks to prepare for the game and lost their game before the bye week. FSU is (1-5), and Duke is (5-1), but Duke is a -3.5 betting favorite, with an over/under total of 42.5, according to DraftKings. Those odds imply a 23-19 win for the Blue Devils. If they win, it would be the first time they've beaten FSU in football after 20 consecutive losses.
The odds make sense a little, considering it's a road game for FSU. FSU ranks No. 64 nationally via FEI advanced metrics. They have the No. 84 offense, the No. 50 defense, and the No. 2 special teams.
Duke ranks No. 65 nationally. They have the No. 91 offense, No. 33 defense, and the No. 51 special teams. The record difference indicates Duke has played a much softer schedule than FSU through the first six games, considering only two wins came against teams from major conferences.
According to DraftKings, 71 percent of the bets are on the Duke money line to win, and 61 percent are on Duke to cover the -3.5 spread. Interestingly, 83 percent of the bets are on the OVER 42.5.
FSU hasn't scored more than 14 points since the season opener, and Duke's offense is worse than FSU's, according to FEI. However, one X-factor could be that FSU has a new QB in Brock Glenn, who looked competent in his first start this year against Clemson. This could be a game where some bettors look at the records and think Duke is a sure win, but I don't call it in that category. The money line for FSU is +136, meaning if you bet $100 on FSU and they win, you'd win $136.
That's a valuable bet, considering FSU has the most talented team. It's fair to say that FSU has had the more talented team in nearly every game and lost, but most of those teams have been better than Duke. I'll be interested to see where this line ends up on Friday night, but all those bets on Duke are interesting, to say the least. It's a good matchup for FSU on paper.
