Florida State football had an embarrassing showing in 2024. This is something that head football coach Mike Norvell and the fan base never want to remember again.

Norvell had to look himself in the mirror and made major changes this offseason. It isn't the easiest aspect for a person of authority to hand off the keys to an offense. However, with how the Seminoles operated on that side of the football last year, it isn't surprising.

Florida State football averaged 15.4 points per game in 2024. This offense was supposed to be built for playmakers, but the unit was lucky to get a pass completion longer than 20 yards.

Norvell made a power move by hiring former UCF head football coach Gus Malzahn. He worked under Malzahn when he was the wide receivers coach at Tulsa, so the pre-existing relationship was there already.

The former Auburn head football coach has a familiarity of playing Florida State back in the 2013 BCS National Championship Game where the Seminoles came out victorious by a score of 34-31.

The Tigers had Florida State on the ropes where they had a 21-3 advantage in the second quarter. There might have even been some undisclosed sign-stealing going on (call them the Houston Astros...).

In all seriousness, Florida State football's media team dropped a snippet of "The Climb" video series, which goes in-depth with the Seminoles' program. One interesting quote is when Malzahn appears in the video and says the following: "I'm here to help us win another national championship."

You might wonder why I am making a big deal about the quote from the offensive coordinator since he wouldn't say anything negative about the team. The truth of the matter is that Malzahn is a respected member of the coaching community and is one of the better offensive minds in college football.

There had to have been a sigh of relief when he received a phone call from head football coach Mike Norvell to take a lesser role as an offensive coordinator to hyperfocus on one side of the football instead of having to be in control of everything as the head man.

This is a Gus Malzahn who is looking to score many points in Tallahassee and make the offense dynamic in 2025 and beyond.
