FSU fans on edge with early deficit and questionable red-zone play calling

Sometimes you just have to run the dang ball

Through one quarter, FSU is trailing Virginia 7-0 as the trap game is playing out as such. As is customary in these sorts of trap games, the better team has been their own worst enemy.

The Seminoles have already turned the ball over twice and had a couple of boneheaded penalties. You know all the things that they weren't supposed to do this year. Gavin Sawchuk lost a fumble, which led to Virginia's touchdown, but it was the second turnover, an interception by Tommy Castellanos on 1st-and-goal that have fans quite annoyed.

What makes the second turnover inexplicable is that FSU was gashing Virginia with the run up until that point. On the previous two plays, Caziah Holmes had carries of 17 and 15 yards to give the Seminoles a first-and-goal at the 5.

So why call a pass play there? That is what some fans would like to know.

It's time to pound the rock

In their first three possessions, FSU has 73 rushing yards on nine carries. That's 8.1 yards per carry. Yes,I get that FSU wants to stretch the field, and they think they can continue to hit big passes with Castellanos, who rates No. 1 in "big-time throws" so far this season.

But forget that. It's first-and-goal at the 5-yard line. The Seminoles offensive line is MASSIVE compared to what the Cavaliers are putting out there on defense. Don't give them extra opportunities and score touchdowns in the red zone.

(UPDATE: Virginia scored again.and leads 14-0)

This shouldn't be one of those games. It's crystal clear that FSU has the size advantage, the speed advantage and the advantage in athleticism. Use the talented stable of running backs to wear Virginia down and once they are sold out on the run, hirt the big plays over the top. No excuses.
