Could the true freshman be a viable quarterback during his tenure as a Seminole?

Florida State football did not have a productive campaign in 2024, where it finished with a 2-10 record. The Seminoles thought that they had a viable veteran transfer signal-caller in DJ Uiagalelei who could command the offense and make the program conference championship contenders.

However, that notion was way off, as Uiagalelei had suffered a season-ending injury versus the SMU Mustangs. The coaching staff had to pivot to youngsters on the roster, such as Luke Kromenhoek and Brock Glenn.

Kromenhoek is now enrolled at Mississippi State, while Glenn is trying to find his way around Gus Malzahn's new offensive scheme.

Florida State added former UCF and Boston College quarterback transfer Thomas Castellanos, who is looking like a good candidate to be the starter for the Seminoles in 2025. With that said, the fan base wants the coaching staff to stop going after transfers and develop their product in-house.

Some individuals feel like head football coach Mike Norvell has only been successful because of do-it-all quarterback Jordan Travis. While that is a fair assessment, I do want to hold my judgment until after this year when Castellanos is being coached by Gus Malzahn.

The fact remains that the Seminoles need to recruit better at the quarterback position to ensure that it is stabilized nicely for future seasons. They added four-star Kevin Sperry in the 2025 recruiting class. He enrolled early, so he will have the opportunity to learn the playbook and get acclimated to the collegiate game.

Norvell spoke to the media on Saturday afternoon after the Seminoles' first spring scrimmage. He mentioned that he was excited at what he saw from true freshman quarterback Kevin Sperry. He also stated that he had explosive plays where he pushed the football downfield.

This could pay dividends for a young quarterback's confidence. I get that it is just a practice and we want to see it in-game action, but building good habits could prepare him when Sperry is ready to contribute.
