The Florida State Seminoles are days away from the start of the 2026 season. While there are a few familiar faces returning who already have a role on this team, several players helped their cause for more playing time this offseason.
Senior receiver Duce Robinson is one of the Seminoles' best players, and he called out freshman receiver Jasez Lopez as someone fans should be excited to watch. But he didn't stop there, naming fellow freshman safety Jordan Crutchfield as one on the defensive side.
The fact that Robinson named Crutchfield as a player to keep an eye on is telling and shows how productive he has been this offseason.
Jordan Crutchfield's Florida State emergence is picking up at the right time
Crutchfield is a four-star recruit out of Vero Beach High School. He was rated No. 461 nationally and No. 39 safety in the Class of 2026. Despite being a freshman, he has the size that will always catch the attention of coaches. He's listed at 6-foot-3 and weighs 218 pounds.
The Seminoles will likely have the trio of Ashlynd Barker, CJ Richard, and K.J. Kirkland splitting duties at safety. Meanwhile, Ma'Khi Jones is slated to start in the slot, but that's a spot where Crutchfield could steal some reps. Especially since Notre Dame transfer Karson Hobbs' season is over due to injury.
Crutchfield could be thrown in the slot on run and short-yardage situations, while also giving this defense another safety to throw in the mix. Even though he wasn't around for long, the freshman has stood out to head coach Mike Norvell.
"Jordan Crutchfield is another young guy that [we're] very excited about. Things that he's shown early. We'll see where that emerges," Norvell said when speaking to the media on Aug. 24.
Getting named dropped by Norvell isn't anything to sneeze at and shows that he's made plays this summer. And that goes hand in hand with Robinson saying Crutchfield is a player to watch.
Florida State wanted reinforcements added to this secondary, and it appears they now have multiple players who could be fighting for reps. Crutchfield making an impact on the practice field this early is a positive sign and puts the coaching staff in a difficult position. Everyone won't be able to play, yet Crutchfield may be making it hard to keep him on the sidelines.
With different matchups and game plans set to unfold, there could be weeks when he plays more and others when he plays less. But it looks like he's going to play somehow, someway.
Norvell stated that special teams is one avenue where young players can get on the field and earn more reps elsewhere. If the Florida native makes plays there, it'll only boost his value elsewhere.
The football season is long, and plenty of things can change. Having several guys who can step in is a major bonus, and that seems to be the case with the Seminoles' safety room. While Crutchfield may not be a full-time starter, he's a player who is doing the little things right in practice, and that should allow him to get action on game day. How much he gets remains to be seen, but he'll be out there at times for the 2026 season.
