Florida State football has had its fair share of great running backs in its program history, such as Warrick Dunn, Dalvin Cook, Greg Jones, Devonta Freeman, Travis Minor, Leon Washington, Cam Akers, and Trey Benson (just to name a few).
We at ChopChat always like to share former Seminole players who are currently playing in the NFL. It is always fascinating to see how they perform in a professional setting.
One player who did well in Sunday's matchups was running back Cam Akers. The talk of superstar Aaron Jones, who has performed well all season for the Minnesota Vikings. Jones was playing against his former team (the Green Bay Packers).
Akers was a good back during a tough time at Florida State from 2017-2019 where he transitioned from Jimbo Fisher to Willie Taggart. Even with the challenging circumstances, he had 2,874 rushing yards and 27 touchdowns in a three-year career.
He was drafted in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams. Akers had a productive rookie season and third year for the Rams, where he had over 600+ rushing yards in both campaigns. However, in the NFL, the running back position seems to be replaceable for franchises.
Akers found a home in Minnesota after his short stint with the Houston Texans earlier in the year. The Vikings are coming down to the season's end and had to play the Packers on Sunday. This game had playoff implications on the line, as well as it being a rivalry.
With the Vikings holding a 27-25 lead late in the fourth quarter, they dialed up a pass play for Cam Akers in the flat to get a first down. It was a remarkable catch by the back to seal the game.
This could give Akers more opportunities for the Vikings in the NFL Playoffs. They will need all the offense that they can get to beat the Eagles and Lions in the NFC.
