Former FSU great and three-time NFL All-Pro Anquan Boldin sat down with Udonis Haslem and Mike Miller for an episode of 'The OGs' podcast last week. The wide-ranging conversation featured Boldin talking about growing up in Pahokee, Florida and becoming a USA Today high school All-American and Florida's Mr. Football while playing for the Blue Devils.
Boldin was a five-star prospect and his recruitment was one of the most hotly contested in the state. Eventually, his recruitment came down to FSU and Florida with both Bobby Bowden and Steve Spurrier getting a crack at the top talent on an official visit. Needless to say, Boldin's meeting with Spurrier did not go as expected.
"The reason I didn't come to Florida is because...Spurrier, I just didn't trust Spurrier," Boldin said. "I remember on my visit, being in his office, and like, dude could not look me in my eyes."
The 2003 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year went on to say that while he was in the office with Spurrier, the College Football Hall of Fame coach seemed to be pre-occupied with one of his favorite hobbies -- golf.
"I'm sitting down and dude is in his office, he's putting and as he's putting," Boldin said. "He's like 'they say I wouldn't play a black quarterback, but they don't know I had a black quarterback at Duke."
If you think that was the strangest part of Boldin's official visit to UF, you'd be wrong. Boldin later goes into a story about football players and basketball players getting into a brawl with each other after an incident involving former Gator receiver Darrell Jackson.
Boldin ended up committing to FSU and signing with the Seminoles on National Signing Day in 1999. He went on to be part of FSU's wire-to-wire championship team in 1999 and held a 3-1 record against the Gators during his time in Tallahassee. Boldin was originally recruited as a quarterback, but switched to wide receiver quickly in his freshman year. He never returned to quarterback full-time, but had to play the position in a pinch during the 2003 Sugar Bowl against Georgia.
If only Florida State had Anquan Boldin last night to fill-in at the quarterback position 😂 pic.twitter.com/YzsSF0IGIS
