Is this the beginning of FSU tightening its grip on Tallahassee?
Rashad Greene was named the wide receivers coach at Tallahassee’s Lincoln High School, according to Florida Today. Lincoln has produced FSU greats and favorites such as Antonio Cromartie, Fred Rouse, and Craphonso Thrope.
Many, including myself, have criticized Mike Norvell for his lack of high school recruiting prowess over the years. This move provides a golden opportunity for a shift in thought and execution of how the Seminoles are built. Long term, this could help FSU lock down Tallahassee in a major way.
Credibility
Rashad also brings a national title ring with him to Lincoln that should establish credibility, even if the players do not remember him, per se. He has NFL playing experience (as recently as 2018), according to Pro-Football-Reference, and with his resume, the relationship should start with respect.
They should expect development, a pathway to the league, and intense film study. You do not become who Rashad Greene is by happenstance. Hard work will be the standard.
It will still be hard to compete with schools such as Alabama, Georgia, and even Louisville, etc., but this qualifies as a step for Norvell (or his successor) to build a foundation of talent and depth for years to come.
High school will always remain a priority, and though college sports are turning more and more into professional sports by the day, the core of the sport (high school recruiting) cannot be completely ignored. If nothing else, Lincoln will provide a pipeline of wide receivers as they are in good hands with Rashad Greene.
The Final Spear
Tallahassee is not quite Miami-Dade or Broward County, but it stands on its own as having high-quality high school results. Greene’s presence could renew the value of building in Tallahassee and create a formidable local base of talent.
His hiring may not single-handedly contribute to directly bringing Florida State back to the top of the sport, but it will serve as a critical part of that journey. If a prospect plays for Coach Greene, Florida State naturally becomes a part of their DNA.
