Florida State basketball and Thomas Bassong thought they’d be together for the 2026-27 season. However, some miscommunication or inability to come to terms on the contract caused the two to part ways after one season.

Bassong posted on his social media account that his agent and family were unhappy with the contract Florida State offered after he announced he’d come back. Florida State presented a new contract with a deadline to sign it, and Bassong didn’t sign it before the deadline, so he had to enter the transfer portal.

It sounded like Bassong wanted to stay at Florida State, but some outside influence may have been in his ear about what they believed his value was. Nevertheless, Bassong has found a new home in the SEC with Mississippi State:

Ironically, that’s the same place several former Florida State football players transferred to after the 2025 season. That’s likely a coincidence, but at least he found a home after jumping in the transfer portal at the last minute. The ability to find a home that quickly is a testament to his potential, and it’s unfortunate that he and Florida State couldn’t get on the same page. However, it’s clear that Florida State wanted him back, or they would have told him to enter the transfer portal after they turned the first offer down.

Bassong averaged nearly six points and 3.5 rebounds per game, while averaging just over 19 minutes per game. The 6’8” forward will join a Bulldog program that was worse than Florida State last season, finishing (13-19, 5-13 SEC).

Florida State signed an international player shortly after Bassong announced plans to enter the transfer portal and have signed one of the top transfer portal classes nationally. Bassong seems like a good young man, and he'll have three years of eligibility remaining.
