Year 7 of the Mike Norvell era at Florida State kicks off on Saturday night at Doak Campbell Stadium, and if it doesn’t go well, it could be the last. Norvell is on the hot seat after back-to-back losing seasons, but with a new quarterback, Ashton Daniels, and elite skill players, Duce Robinson and Ousmane Kromah, the Seminoles could be poised for a bounce-back.
Daniels isn't the only change on offense, however. Norvell is also back on the headset as FSU's play-caller after ceding the responsibility to Gus Malzahn last season. Expect a run-first approach behind the 6-foot-2, 225-pound Daniels and a three-headed monster in the backfield with Kromah, Samuel Singleton Jr., and Quintrevion Wisner.
Defensively, the Seminoles will look familiar with Tony White back for his second season as defensive coordinator. Despite losing Darrell Jackson Jr. and Earl Little Jr., White also has sophomores Mandrell and Darryll Desir back along the defensive line after promising freshman campaigns. Like Kromah, they could be poised for a breakout, and that could start on Saturday night.
Week 0 against New Mexico State won’t determine whether or not FSU is ready to contend in the ACC or whether or not Norvell can save his job, but it will give an important first look at this year’s team. Norvell has opted not to release a depth chart, so Saturday will provide some important information and hopefully, a bit of catharsis for FSU fans after a trying offseason.
