It’s that time of year. Football season kicks off on Saturday, so you better make sure your tailgate grill still works and that you’ve got enough drinks to fill your cooler (or more likely, enough cooler to fit all your drinks). With so much focus on Week 0, however, you may have missed a few pieces of Florida State news that have already come through this week.

Link Jarrett adds Pitt transfer AJ Nessler after California court ruling
Last week, the NCAA was granted a stay against the ruling from Judge Charlotte Sweeney in a federal court in Colorado earlier this summer that granted a fifth year of eligibility to all Class of 2022 athletes for the 2026-27 athletic year.
However, any athlete named as a plaintiff in an eligibility lawsuit at the state or local level who won a temporary restraining order against the NCAA is still considered eligible. That includes former Pitt outfielder AJ Nessler, who has played over 150 games across four years after arriving in Pittsburgh in 2022. He spent the 2024 season at UCF before returning to Pitt. At least for now, Nessler is eligible to play this season based on a California court ruling he was part of.
The Tampa Jesuit High School product started all but one of Pitt’s 57 games last season, and 37 of those starts came in center field. He slashed .310/.410/.496 with nine home runs and 14 stolen bases.
It seemed Link Jarrett was done adding to his roster for the 2027 season, but with Nessler declared eligible, he picked up some important depth for his outfield, which includes returners John Stuetzer and Brody DeLamielleure, Georgia transfer Ty Peeples, and 6-foot-6 freshman Genson Veras.
Seminoles women’s soccer falls in the Sunshine Showdown
Before Sunday, Florida State women’s soccer had won 36 straight non-conference games in the regular season, a streak that began back in 2019. It finally came to an end in Gainesville as the unranked Gators downed No. 3 Florida State 3-1.
The loss drops FSU to 3-1 on the year with wins over Stetson, FIU, and Florida Atlantic. Next, the defending national champions will head to Athens for another road test against an SEC foe, taking on Georgia on Thursday night.
The loss to the Gators also snapped another streak, as the Seminoles had won eight straight against their in-state rivals, the longest win streak either way in the rivalry. Freshman forward Ryder Ajeto was the lone goal-scorer for FSU, netting the second of her career.

One of Florida State’s biggest offseason pickups came in the backfield as Mike Norvell and general manager John Garrett added former Texas running back Quintrevion Wisner. However, Wisner missed much of fall camp with an injury, allowing rising sophomore Ousmane Kromah to establish himself as the clear RB1 in a time-share with Wisner and Samuel Singleton Jr.
Wisner is back healthy now, however, and according to Mike Norvell’s first game-week press conference of the season on Monday, he’s ready to suit up in Week 0 when the Noles host New Mexico State.
Without Norvell releasing a depth chart this season, it’ll be interesting to see the pecking order in the backfield with all three healthy.

Chaminade-Madonna junior quarterback Brady Quinn is the No. 22 quarterback in the country and the highest-rated uncommitted QB in the state of Florida. He’s not quite on the level of IMG’s Jayden Wade or American Heritage’s Neimann Lawrence, but the four-star would be a big get for the Seminoles.
He appears content to be patient in his recruitment, but things may speed up now that he has game-day visits set this fall with UCLA and Florida State. Steve Wiltfong of On3 reported that scheduled visit to Tallahassee on Monday.
