With fall camp underway, news is trickling out of Tallahassee ahead of the Seminoles' Week 0 matchup with New Mexico State on August 29 at Doak Campbell Stadium. It’s hard to keep up with everything, but here are a few pieces of news you may have missed about FSU football and more.Â
FSU WR Duce Robinson named to Maxwell Award Watch List
While it’s not the Heisman Trophy, the Maxwell Award is one of the most prestigious awards in college football. It’s been awarded to the outstanding player in the sport annually since 1937. Last year, the award went to the Heisman Trophy winner, Fernando Mendoza, but that’s not necessarily always the case.Â
At times, in a close Heisman race, the award will go to the runner-up, as it did in 2024 when Ashton Jeanty won it and in 2023 when Michael Penix Jr. was recognized for his outstanding year with Washington.Â
Duce Robinson likely doesn’t have a path to the Heisman Trophy, which is so often awarded to the top quarterback in the sport, but with a huge year, the All-ACC wide receiver could find himself in the mix for the Maxwell. On Monday, it was announced that Robinson is on the preseason watch list.Â
The more realistic recognition for Robinson to chase this season is the Biletnikoff Award, given to the nation’s top pass catcher each year. Robinson was one of five receivers in the ACC to clear 1,000 yards last season, doing so with just 56 receptions.Â
Austin Tucker updates the QB room
On Monday, quarterbacks coach Austin Tucker joined the chorus of praise for Ashton Daniels that has been flowing out of Tallahassee since the start of fall camp. The Auburn transfer was named the starter back in spring ball and has seemingly impressed his coaches and teammates with the growth he’s made since then.Â
However, Daniels wasn’t the only QB Tucker spoke about when he met with the media. He also highlighted JUCO transfer Malachi Marshall, who is competing with Kevin Sperry for the QB2 role. Marshall arrived later than the other enrollees this offseason, but he’s made up quite a bit of ground according to his position coach.Â
"Malachi has been great," Tucker told reporters, including Noles247’s Kolby Crawford. "He's done a great job since he got here, just really attacking every single day. He's a very talented player, has great arm talent and has shown to make good decisions on the field. It's been good to see how quickly, him getting a late start, that he's able to learn the offense, build relationships with those players, and go out and execute."
Of Sperry, Tucker said, "Kevin's another one, from day one to day five, continued growth in his game… Just his comfort back there, understanding the offense and everything that goes with that, and playing the position. Experience is so critical at the quarterback position, and I've seen his strides continue to improve."
Both will see action in Florida State’s first scrimmage of fall camp on Tuesday night at Doak Campbell Stadium.Â

Last week, as he prepares for Year 2 leading the Seminoles, Luke Loucks announced two promotions on his staff, elevating Kyle Washington to assistant coach and Aiden Malone to director of basketball operations.Â
Last season, Washington served as director of video and scouting while Malone spent the last two years as a graduate assistant on Florida State’s staff. The two will play a key role in building up the FSU basketball program after a promising first year from Loucks and his staff.
