The Florida State Seminoles are keeping one eye on 2026 while also looking down the line as they seek to build this team for future success. Head coach Mike Norvell has had an up-and-down tenure in Tallahassee, but it appears his time will soon come to an end.
After two underwhelming campaigns in back-to-back years, it seems like he could be gone sooner rather than later. Despite that being the belief among fans, he's acting as if he'll be the lead man for the future. And the comments made by 2028 four-star quarterback Chandler Dyson from Warner Robins, Georgia, show that.
According to Chad Simmons of Rivals, Florida State is in a great spot with Dyson, and Norvell plays a role in that.
"Coach Norvell is a great coach. He’s been through some adversity, and he’s working through it," Dyson said per Simmons.
And while it's great to know that Dyson is interested, it comes with a massive question. Would Dyson still want to commit to Florida State if Norvell gets the axe?
One Mike Norvell reality could change everything for Florida State's top QB target
After visiting Florida State, Dyson came away excited about the idea of being a Seminole. And a lot of that was due to the coach's vision.
When you look at Dyson, you can see why Florida State wants him to commit. He stands at 6-foot-3 and weighs 230 pounds. Dyson is the 12th-ranked quarterback and 217th-ranked player overall in the 2028 class per 247Sports.
He's also getting interest from Georgia Tech, LSU, Nebraska, and North Carolina, but he's made it known that Florida State sticks out. Dyson is a dual-threat quarterback who will use his speed and size to his advantage in the open field. Not only can he become a dynamic rusher, but he also owns a strong arm to uncork for a football 50-plus yards downfield.
Dyson has shown his ability to make passes on the run while generating terrific power on downfield throws. That makes the idea of him running the show exciting.
Despite this being an interesting dilemma, it makes you think whether Dyson would stay committed to Florida State even if Norvell is no longer the head man. Once a coaching staff is gone, the plan for future recruits can go out the window.
The 2027 recruiting class has been a wash, putting a bigger emphasis on 2028 and beyond. The Seminoles named John Garrett as their general manager of player personnel, as he takes charge of leading the new chapter of Seminoles football.
It's safe to assume Garrett spoke with Dyson during his visit, but there's no telling the impact he had there. The coaching staff is a big reason why players want to go to specific schools, making it probable that Novell and his guys crafted a good plan for Dyson.
Only time will tell how this situation will pan out, but if Norvell does get let go, it'll be interesting to see if Dyson's interest in Florida State wavers.
