Florida State’s 2027 ACC opponents make it the perfect year to break in a new head coach

The ACC released the conference’s football opponents for the 2027 season, and after being forced to navigate something of an eight-game gauntlet, playing the fewest conference games but also many of the toughest in 2026, it’s shaping up to be the perfect year to break in a new head coach. 

Florida State will host Duke, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Miami, and Stanford next season while visiting Cal, Clemson, North Carolina, and Syracuse. 

FSU draws 5 home games in 9-game ACC schedule

It’s hard to know how good any of those teams will be a year from now before we really have a sense of who they are in 2026, but of its nine conference games, five will be at Doak Campbell Stadium, and only one road trip (Cal) leaves the Eastern time zone. That’s favorable to begin with, and the opponents don’t make it much tougher. 

Of course, Miami will always be a difficult matchup. Nobody in the ACC is spending anywhere close to Miami’s level. However, there’s no SMU and no Virginia Tech on the schedule, which are budding powers investing heavily to remain at the top of the ACC. 

Clemson, Louisville, and Georgia Tech also spend like serious programs, earnestly attempting to win, but Stanford and Duke are both bottom-10 FBS programs in terms of roster spending in 2026. That doesn’t ensure a team will be bad, but it does ensure the path to being good will be significantly more difficult to navigate. 

Florida State also plays Florida and ETSU in non-conference games and has one additional schedule slot left to fill with a non-conference opponent. 

You can’t waste a favorable schedule on another year of Mike Norvell

Not to make everything about the head coaching situation, but there’s no coach in the country in a hotter seat than Norvell, so it colors every discussion about the future of the program. There’s no way to talk about the 2027 ACC opponents without speculating about whether or not he’ll still be the coach when those games are played. 

Frankly, this schedule is just another reason to move on. 

It’s a bad process to base a head coaching change, especially one that carries a $50 million buyout, on the next year’s schedule draw. However, it’s an increasingly impactful aspect to consider, as the bloated super conferences have created such unbalanced schedules. 

For example, Florida State knew it had a difficult schedule draw in the ACC in 2026, playing all three of the conference’s presumed top contenders: Miami, SMU, and Louisville, along with Clemson and Virginia. It makes sense to let Norvell take that season on the chin and let his buyout continue to drop. 

But what you don’t want to do is give a failing head coach like Norvell, who has made it abundantly clear he’s not right for the job, one last chance with a favorable schedule, as Wisconsin is doing with Luke Fickell this year, and risk the team finishing with a misleading record and the coach saving their job as a result. 

So, this schedule is just more confirmation that Florida State needs to rip the band-aid, swallow the poison-pill buyout, and move on from Norvell.
