Florida State news: Baseball/Softball surge top 5 nationally, CFP expansion, more

FSU baseball (3-0) defeated James Madison in a three-game series to open the 2025 season over the weekend. Their performance has them at No. 5 nationally, according to Baseball America.

FSU softball (8-1) went undefeated in the Clearwater Invitational, defeating No. 16 Missouri, Ohio State, Wichita State, and UCF. Their performance has them at No. 5 nationally, according to Softball America.

Freshman Noah Sheffield made his debut as a Nole and got his first collegiate hit against JMU. He's the son of former MLB outfielder Gary Sheffield if you couldn't tell by the batting stance.

There is no hitter hotter on the planet than Kennedy Harp, who took home MVP Honors at the Clearwater Invitational. Michaela Edenfield and Isa Torres also had a monster tournament.

FSU redshirt freshman cornerback and former blue-chip recruit Charles Lester was arrested for a DUI charge Monday morning. Lester was released on a $500 bail. FSU typically handles these issues internally, as was the case with Shyheim Brown last year. The off-the-field incidences have been few and far between in the Mike Norvell era.

FSU is at the mercy of whatever college football folks decide as long as they remain in the ACC. If I were an FSU football fan, I'd worry less about what happens in things like this and more about FSU controlling what it can control. I know it's an oxymoron, but FSU winning on the field solves a lot of its problems. The team going 2-10 and becoming the laughing stock of college football did them no favors in getting out of the ACC or the benefit of the doubt when it comes to the media looking for reasons to be negative towards the Noles.

However, expansion could open the door to the B1G/SEC expanding again and potentially providing FSU an opportunity to get out of the ACC sooner rather than later. Of course, FSU and Clemson continue to negotiate with the ACC/ESPN while still having active lawsuits.

FSU women's basketball beat Miami at the buzzer without star player Ta'Niya Latson. Latson is day-to-day with an injury, according to FSU head coach Brooke Wyckoff.
