Florida State needs a new athletic director after the firing of Michael Alford just two games into the college football season. Alford had been on the hot seat heading into the year as football had hit a wall, and numerous other issues had grown during his tenure. The decision to move on from Alford was finally made, but there are other people who now must be worried about hitting the job market.
Alford spent 2017-2020 was Central Michigan in the same role before briefly serving as the head of the Seminoles Boosters for a year. Florida State announced the promotion of Alford in 2021, and along with his promotion came new support and contract extensions for coach Mike Norvell. The Seminoles' football team has fallen flat, and without Alford to help push his methods, Norvell is likely already packing his bags.

Alford is officially out of a job, and unfortunately, the move was something that many had seen coming during the 2026 season. Florida State has taken multiple steps backwards, not just on the football field, but across the board in multiple areas.
After 23 wins in the first two football seasons Alford oversaw, the program has gone on to win eight games since, with only three wins over ACC opponents. The overall competitiveness of the Seminoles' football program has dropped, and with football being king, Alford needed to go before things somehow became worse. Additionally, the firing of Norvell has been teased for months now, and the easiest way to make the move as painless as possible is by cleaning out the person who has been supportive in the past.
No Alford moving forward likely means no Norvell, and the timing could not be worse for the duo as the embarrassment piles on. Florida State was forced to delay the Week 1 game against SMU in Tallahassee due to a power outage, despite just putting the finishing touches on immense renovations.
Norvell is set to face Alabama this weekend right after the Crimson Tide put up 45 points against Kentucky. With Florida State staring down a potentially ugly loss, and without the support of the athletic department anymore, Norvell could be traveling into his final game with the program.
